Exam Structure
The CFA Level III exam follows a mixed-format structure that combines constructed response (essay) questions and item set (multiple-choice) questions, both based on case-study vignettes rather than standalone questions. The exam consists of a total of 22 sets, including 11 essay sets and 11 item sets, out of which 20 are scored and 2 are unscoredtrial questions, with each set carrying equal weight. These sets are distributed across two sessions, with each session containing a mix of essay and item set questions.
Exam Duration
The total exam duration is 4 hours and 24 minutes, divided into two sessions of 2 hours and 12 minutes each, with an optional break in between.
Important Exam Characteristics
There is no negative marking, and candidates are encouraged to attempt all questions. Additionally, topics are not fixed by session and can appear in any part of the exam, and candidates may choose from specialized pathways such as portfolio management, private wealth, or private markets, reflecting a more practical and career-oriented approach at this final level of the CFA Program.

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the CFA Level III exam, a candidate must have first passed CFA Level II, as progression in the CFA Program is strictly sequential and registration for Level III is not permitted without clearing the previous level.
In addition, the candidate must meet the education or work experience requirement at the time of registration, which includes either completing a bachelor’s degree or accumulating at least 4,000 hours of professional work experience(or a combination of higher education and work experience over a minimum of three years). Unlike Levels I and II, which allow students to appear while still pursuing their degree, Level III requires the degree to be fully completed or an equivalent level of work experience.
